3 Tips for Increasing The Humidity Around Your Plants

Houseplants love humidity and sometimes it's hard to keep the moisture levels up. Here are some of my top 3 affordable tips for increasing the humidity around your plants!

Group Your Plants

This is probably one of the easiest and most affordable ways to increase the humidity around your houseplants. Plants release moisture through the leaves in a process called transpiration. As your houseplants release moisture, it creates a microclimate that will benefit your plants.

I suggest grouping your plants based on certain criteria like light, humidity, thirst, temperature, and looks (obviously lol). By grouping plants that have the same care requirements, you make your plants happier and your life easier. For example group your high humidity plants together like a silver ribbon fern, nerve plant, and a Boston Fern! I also group cacti and succulent plants together as seen in the picture to the left.

Pro Tip: Add one expressive plant in your plant groupings. Expressive plants are houseplants that will droop when they are thirsty or let you know when they need something. This plant will let you know when all of your plants in the group need care!

Use a Pebble Tray

A pebble tray is an easy solution for those plants that just can't stay happy. A pebble tray (or humidity tray) placed underneath your plant can create a humid microclimate!

Simply take a tray or shallow dish and fill it with pebbles, lecca balls, decorative beads, or even broken terra cotta pieces. Then fill the tray with water about a half of the way up. You want the water to fill the tray, but not go over the pebbles. Then place your plant on the tray.

The pebbles will keep the pot out of the water and as the water evaporates it will create a little bubble of humidity around your plant!

A humidifier is a great addition to your plant care supplies! Not only are they great for your own health, but they also help out a lot when your plants need some more moisture.

When choosing a humidifier try to choose one that is evaporative or has an ultrasonic cool mist unit that is portable and mobile. You also want to note the noise level as well as tank size. You don't want a humidifier screaming at you all day and you also don't want to have to keep refilling a humidifier over and over again.

Overall Best Selling Humidifier

The Honeywell HCM350B Germ-Free Cool Mist Humidifier works quietly and is high quality. It is recommended for it's evaporative and ultraviolet technology. It has a large 1-gallon tank that runs for 24 hours. It's a little more expensive, but you are paying for the high quality.

The main downside is the filter needs to be replaced every so often.

Best Budget-Friendly Humidifier

The Taotronics Cool Mist Humidifier is a cool-mist humidifier and has a 4-liter tank. This humidifier is quiet, easy to refill, and has a maximum duration of 30 hours. This humidifier is the best option for plants that are in large rooms. It also has a little screen that shows the current humidity in the room as well as the desired humidity.

All in all, do what works for you and your plants! You don't necessarily need to go out and buy all kinds of equipment if you don't need to. Watch your plants and their care needs then adapt as you see fit. Remember it's your plant journey!
