Why Nashville is not one design problem
Music Row is roughly four hundred buildings, and most of them are converted Victorian houses, Craftsman bungalows and American Foursquares with purpose-built studios wedged between them. A room there has residential proportions, retrofitted mechanical systems and small windows. Twelve minutes away, a Gulch tower is glass on three sides. The same plant list cannot serve both.
How the design gets made

Design starts with the room, not the plant
Most interior plant projects go wrong at the beginning, when somebody picks the plant first and then looks for somewhere to put it. We work the other way. The second step of our process is a site visit where we evaluate lighting, architecture, circulation and existing conditions, and only after that do we develop the creative direction.
That order matters more in Nashville than it does in a city with uniform building stock. Music Row was named a National Treasure by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 2015, and the reason is the building stock itself — RCA Studio B has stood at 1611 Roy Acuff Place since 1957, and the Quonset Hut next door is a prefabricated metal shed put up in 1955 beside a Victorian house. Those are lovely rooms and they are difficult rooms: deep interiors, small original windows, and mechanical systems added decades after the walls went up.
What we specify, and what we source
Design development covers plant and planter selections, layouts, renderings where the project needs them, installation planning, and maintenance recommendations. We source plants and planters together rather than choosing a plant and hunting for a pot, because the vessel is doing as much of the design work as the foliage is.
Before anything reaches your space we inspect, acclimate and stage every element. Acclimation is the step most installations skip, and it is why plants that looked perfect on delivery day drop half their leaves in week three — they were moved from a greenhouse at ninety percent humidity into a conditioned office without a transition.

Frequently asked questions
Do you design for spaces with almost no natural light?
Yes, and it is most of what we do. A reading at the actual placement tells us what will live there — and in a converted Music Row house or a deep-floorplate office, that reading is frequently a tenth of what the same room measures at the window. The answer is a different plant list, not a bigger plant.
Can you work with our architect or interior designer?
Routinely. Bring us in during design development rather than after furniture installation and the planters can be integrated instead of placed.
What does a consultation cost?
$250 on site, $125 virtual. The on-site version is the one that produces a real specification, because light has to be measured at the placement rather than guessed from photographs.
Does the planting have to be finished before we open?
No, and phasing is often better. Anchor specimens can go in first and the smaller material follow once the space is in use and we can see how people actually move through it.
How long does design take?
Four to six weeks from consultation to install day on a small or medium project. Larger ones depend on sourcing. Our project minimum is $3,000, which is worth knowing before you spend time on a consultation.
