Metro Nashville adopted the 2024 International Codes and ICC A117.1-2017 under ordinance BL2025-898, effective 16 July 2025, with a 180-day grace period for projects already designed under the 2018 IBC.
The three numbers
An accessible route needs 36 inches of clear width. Each exercise machine needs a clear floor space of 30 by 48 inches. And an object with its leading edge between 27 and 80 inches above the floor may protrude only 4 inches into a circulation path.
The clearance problem, and the design answer hiding in it
A planter on a gym floor is governed by three separate ADA provisions at once. Under 307.5 it cannot reduce the clear width required for an accessible route, which 403.5.1 sets at 36 inches minimum. Under 1004 it cannot eat into the 30-by-48-inch clear floor space every exercise machine must have. And under 307.2, if its leading edge sits between 27 and 80 inches above the floor, it may protrude no more than four inches into a circulation path — twelve if it is post-mounted, under 307.3.
There is a genuinely useful consequence buried in that. A floor-standing planter whose leading edge is at or below 27 inches is detectable by cane and is not limited by the protrusion rule at all. Low and wide beats tall and narrow in a gym, and that is a code reason rather than a taste one.
Humidity, heat and what actually survives
The second constraint is climate. A hot yoga room, a sauna studio, a cold plunge space and a spin studio are four different environments, and only one of them resembles a normal interior. Framework is a sauna and cold plunge studio and we maintain planting at both of its locations, so this is a solved problem rather than a theoretical one — but it is solved with a specific plant list, not a general one.
