Biophilic design is the practice of connecting people to nature within the built environment. For us it is not a separate service — it is the reason we measure light at the placement instead of picking a plant from a catalog.
What the term actually means
A design movement rather than a product line. It covers daylight, materials, views, water, natural form and living plants — and how a room makes a person feel rather than how it photographs.
Who searches for it
Architects, interior designers and workplace strategists. Nashville has a genuine concentration of them: Gensler opened a Nashville office in 2022 and signed a 12,500 square foot lease at Nashville Yards in December 2025, and HASTINGS Architecture runs a team of around a hundred including thirty-eight registered architects.
Where it gets specified
Interior planting has its own line in the CSI MasterFormat — section 12 92 00, Interior Planters and Artificial Plants, inside Division 12, Furnishings. It is a specifiable building product, not an afterthought.
The honest version of what biophilic design is
It is a design philosophy about connecting people to nature inside a building. Living plants are one instrument in it, alongside daylight, natural materials, views out, water, and the shapes and patterns that occur in nature.
We say that plainly because the term gets used as a synonym for "put some plants in," and it is not. A room with twelve identical planters distributed evenly is not biophilic; it is decorated. A room where the planting reinforces how people actually move through and use the space, and where the specification responds to the light that room genuinely has, is doing the thing the word describes.
What that changes about how we work
The second step of our process is an on-site consultation that evaluates lighting, architecture, circulation and existing conditions. Circulation is in that list on purpose. Where people walk, pause and sit determines where planting does work and where it is wallpaper.
It also changes plant selection away from what is fashionable and toward what will still look composed in March, which is the difference between a biophilic intent and a biophilic outcome.
For the people who specify buildings
If you are an architect or designer, the useful thing to know is that interior planting has a MasterFormat number and can go in the project manual. Bringing us in at design development rather than after furniture installation means planters get integrated instead of placed, and the plant list gets built against the actual daylight model rather than against a hope.

Frequently asked questions
Is biophilic design a service you sell?
Not as a separate line item. It is the approach behind the design, installation and maintenance we do sell. We would rather explain that than invoice you for a philosophy.
Does it only work in buildings with lots of glass?
No. Some of the most effective work happens in rooms with very little natural light, where the contrast does more. Where the light genuinely will not support the design we install grow lighting — we did that for HMC Civil Rights Law.
Can you work from our architect's drawings?
Yes, and earlier is better. Interior planting sits at CSI 12 92 00 and is treated as FF&E — movable furnishings with no permanent connection to the structure — so it is budgeted alongside furniture rather than in the construction contract.
Is there evidence any of this works?
There is a large research literature on daylight, views and indoor nature in workplaces. We would rather point you at it than summarise it badly on a web page.
What does it cost to start?
Consultations are $250 in person and $125 by video; projects start at $3,000.
